The Croatian national team qualified for the quarter-finals of the Qatar World Cup 2022 by defeating the Japanese national team by penalty kicks 3-1 after the end of the second half and extra time with a positive draw 1-1 in the match that brought them together at Al Janoub Stadium in the round of 16.
The Japanese advanced with a goal in the first half, scored by Daizen Maeda in the 43rd minute.
In the second half, the Croats equalized the score with a goal scored by Perišić in the 55th minute, so the second half ended in a 1-1 draw, and the two teams ruled over the extra runs.
The overtime period ended in a 1-1 tie, and the two teams went into a penalty shootout.
