The International Energy Agency warned that the gas crisis is "not over", calling for a special meeting with the ministers of about forty countries, Wednesday, in order to "study the market situation".
Gas markets have seen the greatest uncertainty since the outbreak of the Ukraine crisis almost a year ago, with historic record prices and unprecedented pressure on global energy markets.
Russia reduced its gas supplies to the European Union in 2022 by less than half, and gas pipelines became almost closed in 2023.
Europeans have limited their gas consumption this winter, but next winter they will rely on supplies of liquefied natural gas imported from the United States and the Middle East, and Europe competes in demand with Asia.
The scheduled meeting will be held via video link under the chairmanship of Canadian Minister of Natural Resources Jonathan Wilkinson, US Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm and Irish Environment Minister Eamon Ryan, with the participation of IAEA member states and non-IAEA countries from the Asia-Pacific region and the American continent.
The meeting aims to"discuss appropriate steps to enhance security of supply".
Although gas prices have fallen from the maximum levels recorded in 2022 and EU countries have raised their stock levels since then, IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol considered that "the crisis is not over," according to a statement.
"There is still a lot to be done, especially to prepare for the coming winter," he said, adding that "we still need our members and other partners to show solidarity and to take practical measures to ensure the security of supplies".
