US President Joe Biden, in his state of the Union address, pledged to work with the Republican Party after the state of division in Congress, calling democracy in his country "invincible" and that the United States will "act" when its sovereignty is threatened.
In his state of the Union address, which is his first to a joint session of Congress since Republicans took control of the House of Representatives in January 2022, Biden noted the progress made in the economy following the coronavirus pandemic..He stressed that a deeply divided Congress could overcome its differences.
"We have often been told that Democrats and Republicans cannot work together, but over the past two years, we have proved the doubters and opponents wrong,"he said.
"I say to my Republican friends that if we have been able to work together in Congress during the past period, there is no reason why we cannot continue this and reach consensus on important things in the future,"the US president added.
Biden is facing Republican lawmakers eager to make their conservative mark on American politics 4 years after the Democrats took control of the House of Representatives.
