North Korea launched, Friday morning, an intercontinental ballistic missile towards the east, after yesterday, Thursday, it launched a short-range ballistic missile towards the East Sea, in protest of the agreement between South Korea, the United States and Japan to enhance extended deterrence.
South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement published by the Korean News Agency (Yonhap) that "North Korea launched this morning what appears to be an intercontinental ballistic missile towards the east."
She added, "The South Korean army is conducting a detailed analysis to verify the details of the missile," noting that the missile flew about 1,000 km, reached a height of about 6,100 km, and reached a speed of Mach 22.
The statement stressed that North Korea's launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile is a major provocative act that undermines peace and stability not only on the Korean Peninsula but also in the international community and represents a clear violation of UN Security Council resolutions, and strongly urged North Korea to stop its missile launch immediately. .
The statement pointed out that the South Korean army will maintain a position of resolute readiness for any provocation from the North while tracking and monitoring the relevant North Korean movements in light of close cooperation with the United States.
According to South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Kim Seong-kyum, and the commander of the South Korean and US Joint Forces Command, General Paul LaCamera, closely shared the situation through a cooperative meeting, and affirmed the joint strong defense stance against any threats and provocations from the North.
North Korea has conducted 35 ballistic missile launches and 3 cruise missile launches this year, according to media reports.
