According to estimates by the Population Division of the United Nations, the world's population exceeded the threshold of eight billion people on Tuesday.
The Secretary-General of the United Nations stated that crossing this symbolic threshold is "an opportunity to celebrate diversity and evolution, while respecting humanity's shared responsibility towards the planet."
There are fears that the planet's population will drain the Earth's resources, especially in light of the richest consumption of the available resources.
The United Nations attributes population growth to human development, as people live longer thanks to improved public health services, nutrition, personal hygiene and medicines.
