Seoul - Agencies:
South Korea's Defense Ministry said on Tuesday that South Korea and the United States conducted joint air exercises that included a US B-52 strategic bomber and F-22 stealth fighters, in an effort to boost the credibility of the US' "extended deterrence."
"The deployment of the B-52H and F-22 fighters this time is part of an effort to enhance the credibility of the United States," the ministry said in a press release.
"South Korea and the United States will work to strengthen the joint defense posture of the South Korea-US alliance regarding North Korea's nuclear and missile threats by continuing to strengthen the alliance's capabilities and stance, including the US Extended Deterrence," the ministry added.
The exercise took place in the air defense identification zone southwest of the southern island of Jeju amid tensions stemming from North Korea's firing of two medium-range ballistic missiles on Sunday. F-35A stealth aircraft and F-15K fighter jets also participated in the exercise.
This week, F-22s from Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan, are scheduled to participate in a separate joint training program that includes South's F-35A aircraft to enhance the allies' capabilities to respond to North Korea's nuclear and missile threats.
