Brazilian football legend Edson Arantes do Nascimento, known as"Pele", nicknamed the"black jewel", died on Thursday, at the age of 82, after a struggle with illness and a month after being transferred to a Sao Paulo hospital.
Kelly Nascimento, Pele's daughter, said on her Instagram account that "everything we are is thanks to you. We love you infinitely. Rest in peace".
According to a statement issued by the Albert Einstein Jewish Hospital in Sao Paulo, the cause of Pele's death was "multiple organ failure, resulting from the development of colon cancer associated with his previous condition".
Pele was hospitalized on November 29 for pneumonia and a reassessment of chemotherapy for colon cancer, according to a hospital statement at the time. Later, the hospital announced that Pele "shows an evolution in cancer (from which he suffers), and requires greater care in relation to renal and cardiac dysfunction".
In December 2021, Pele was admitted to the hospital and underwent chemotherapy. In September of the same year, the football legend underwent surgery to remove a tumor from his right colon, which doctors found during routine examinations.
Pele is considered one of the greatest players in the history of the game of football, having scored 77 goals in 92 international matches in the shirt of his country's national team, and was crowned World Cup champion 3 times.
