The president of FIFA, Mr. Gianni Infantino, and the president of the Association of European clubs, Mr. Nasser Al-Khulaifi, signed a renewed memorandum of understanding between the two bodies, during the meeting of the twenty-ninth General Assembly of the Association of European clubs, held today in the Hungarian capital Budapest.
The agreement, which runs until December 31, 2030, will strengthen the relationship between FIFA and the European Club Association, as well as provide long-term stability to the game at the level of both clubs and national teams.
This memorandum of understanding included the renewal of clubs ' commitment until 2030 to the calendar of international matches, which was unanimously approved by the FIFA Council on March 14, 2023, and the European Club Association confirmed its support for the FIFA Club World Cup in its new format, which will be launched starting in 2025, as it will include 12 European clubs, and the Association of clubs also supported the holding of an annual match between the winner of the UEFA Champions League and the winner of the qualifiers for the idea of creating the FIFA Women's Club World Cup.
The memorandum of understanding also included a reference to the profit distribution program for clubs that release their players to participate in the men's World Cup, as the amount granted will increase to 355 million US dollars in the 2026 and 2030 tournaments, up from 209 million dollars in the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cup tournaments.
In this regard, FIFA president Gianni Infantino said: "This is an important day for the future of football and its long-term stability, and I am very happy to renew and strengthen our cooperation agreement with the European Clubs Association, especially as it is one of the most important actors representing clubs throughout Europe.
"Getting the approval of the European Clubs Association for the new calendar of international matches provides the necessary balance between clubs and National Football teams, and as we are approaching many exciting projects, such as the FIFA Club World Cup in its new format in 2025, and the FIFA Women's Club World Cup, which will be organized for the first time, close cooperation with clubs in Europe and the rest of the world has become essential for the success of such events,"he added.
"We are pleased to sign this historic agreement, which recognizes the central role that clubs play in football globally, and ensures that they are properly present in decision-making processes on issues that affect them,"said the president of the Association of European clubs, Mr. Nasser Al-Khulaifi.
He added: "FIFA and the European Club Association will work more closely to ensure the success of the Club World Cup in its new format, such as working on the sporting and commercial aspects of the 2025 edition and subsequent editions, including working on possible commercial rights management structures.we look forward to working closely with FIFA over the coming months and years to ensure that the proceeds of the new and expanded competitions in men's and women's football are shared correctly and properly."
