The British Conservative government, headed by Rishi Sunak, intends to introduce a new anti-immigration bill, which is aimed in particular at preventing people arriving across the English Channel on small boats from seeking asylum in the UK.
The text, which has been awaited for weeks, includes measures to facilitate the detention of asylum seekers who arrived in the UK illegally and their deportation "as soon as possible, "the Times and the Daily Mail reported in their Monday editions.
The government intends to return them to Rwanda under a law that was voted on, but could not be implemented, due to judicial proceedings that prevented this, or to another country that is considered safe. And people who arrived illegally will be banned for life from returning to the UK.
The Times reported that London is also considering developing new "legal and safe" routes for asylum seekers, without giving further details.
The UK is facing a huge surge in arrivals, with a record of more than 45 thousand people arriving on the country's shores in this way last year 2022, while pressure is growing on the prime minister to limit the phenomenon.
