Jeddah/Private:
The 2023 FIFA Club World Cup begins today, Tuesday, in Jeddah, with a match between Al-Ittihad of Saudi Arabia and Auckland City of New Zealand.
In addition to Al-Ittihad and Auckland City, Manchester City, Urawa of Japan, Al-Ahly of Egypt, Lyon of Mexico and Fluminense of Brazil will participate in the tournament.
The championship competitions will be held from December 12 to December 22 with the participation of 7 teams, the continental champions, as it is the last to be held according to the old system, before the modern system is implemented, starting with the next edition, which will take place in the United States of America in 2025.
It is scheduled to expand the number of participants in the tournament, to include 32 teams instead of 7 clubs, and that the competition will be held every 4 years, instead of being held annually.
According to the current system, the Club World Cup is held with the participation of the champions of the six continents (Europe, Africa, Asia, North America, South America, and Oceania), in addition to a representative of the host country. The titles of the previous editions of the World Cup remained restricted to the clubs of the European and South American continents only, as the teams of the Old Continent won 15 titles in the tournament, while the representatives of Latin America were content to obtain only 4 titles, knowing that Real Madrid won the title 5 times compared to 3 times for its rival Barcelona.
