A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck southern Turkey and northern Syria at dawn on Monday, resulting in hundreds of dead and injured, and the collapse of many buildings, while rescue teams continue to search for survivors amid the rubble.
According to the Syrian Ministry of Health, the earthquake resulted in the death of 111 people and injured 516 others in the provinces of Aleppo, Latakia, Hama and Tartus.
While the Turkish Disaster Management Agency explained in a press statement that 284 people died in Adana, Adiyaman, Malatya, Kahraman Marash and Gaziantep, and 440 citizens were injured in shanli Urfa, Diyarbakir, Adana, Adiyaman, Malatya, Osmaniye, Hatay and Kilis," amid expectations that it will rise much more as a result of the massive destruction of a large number of residential buildings in major cities, and hundreds were injured in the two countries, according to the same sources.
The Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre said: "the probability of a tsunami is being assessed.
Reuters quoted the German geosciences research center as saying that the earthquake reached a magnitude of 7.7 and occurred at a depth of ten kilometers near the city of Kahraman Marash in southern Turkey, where a fire broke out shortly after the earthquake.
US national security adviser Jake Sullivan confirmed that President Joe Biden has directed the US Agency for International Development and other federal government partners to assess response options for the areas most affected by the earthquake in Turkey and Syria.
"The United States is deeply concerned by reports of the devastating earthquake,"he said in a statement released by the White House.
