New York-agencies :
The food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) announced that the world food commodity price index declined in January for the tenth month in a row, with the average food price index reaching 131.2 points, representing a decrease of 0.8 percent from December and 17.9 percent from its peak in March 2022.
"The decline in January was driven by the decline in the price indices of vegetable oils, dairy and sugar, while the prices of cereals and meat remained largely stable,"the organization said.
"Grain prices have not changed significantly from December and have stabilized by 4.8 percent above the previous year's level, but international rice prices increased by 6.2 percent due to low availability of products, strong domestic demand in some Asian exporting countries and exchange rate movements,"she said.
The organization pointed out that the meat price index fell by 0.1 percent from December, while sheep export prices rose due to increased demand for imports.
The FAO index showed that sugar prices fell by 1.1 percent, as the progress of the harvest in Thailand and favorable weather conditions in Brazil outweighed the impact on prices of concerns caused by low harvests in India and high gasoline prices in Brazil.
