Xiaomi revealed a trial version of its “Xiaomi 12S Ultra” phone, which carries a rear camera with a design that allows the installation of professional imaging lenses.
The camera of the Xiaomi 12S Ultra phone, which the company launched last July, has a 1-inch sensor, which makes it larger than most smartphone camera sensors available in the market, but with the new beta version, another 1-inch sensor will come.
The new phone cameras were designed by Xiaomi in cooperation with the camera giant Leica, and the "Xiaomi 12S Ultra" will be compatible with the M lens family from Leica, which will turn it into a professional camera with full capabilities.
And the imaging lenses for the Xiaomi demo phone will provide some professional advantages, such as the ability to reach a true depth of field, instead of relying on just background blurring by a software imaging system, which is the method used by the majority of smartphones.
Xiaomi confirmed that the new version of its phone will rely on an intelligent AI Image Solution system for image processing, with the ability to shoot in 10-Bit RAW mode.
The lenses used are expected to be compatible with the camera application installed on the phone, as well as the possibility to take advantage of software features such as the Focus Peaking feature.
The Chinese company does not plan to put its trial version for sale, and this is supported by the company's history with experimental models of its phones, such as the version it showed in February 2021 with its four edges with a waterfall curved design.
It is noteworthy that the idea of a phone with a design that turns it into a professional camera is not new, as Motorola has previously conducted this experiment in cooperation with camera manufacturer Hasselblad by developing an accessory for the Moto Z phone, which earns a professional photographic lens.
