The World Health Organization (who) has issued an alert regarding the presence of a contaminated batch of the 50 mg methotrex (METHOTREX 50mg) product in the WHO territory for the eastern Mediterranean.
The organization said in a statement that the contaminated batch was found in Yemen and Lebanon after the appearance of harmful effects on sick children receiving the drug, indicating that the health authorities in the two countries conducted microbiological tests on the remaining sealed vials and the test results revealed the presence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria, which indicates contamination of the products.
Who stressed “the need to detect contaminated products and withdraw them from circulation to prevent harm to patients,” and requested increased surveillance and vigilance at the level of supply chains in countries and regions potentially affected by this product.
The organization also advised to increase surveillance at the level of irregular markets and urged the competent authorities to notify them immediately if this product is detected in the markets of their countries.
Who urged manufacturing companies to conduct tests to detect any microbial contamination before issuing batches of finished products for use, stressed the need to obtain medicines through authorized and licensed suppliers, carefully check the authenticity of products and their physical condition.
