The central agency for public mobilization and statistics in Egypt announced on Thursday that annual consumer price inflation in cities has risen to the highest level in more than 5 years.
Inflation rose to 25.8% year-on-year in January from 21.3% in December last year.
The average forecast of 14 analysts suggested that annual inflation may have reached 23.75% in January, up from 21.3% in December, which was the highest since December 2017.
The general inflation rate in Egypt continued to rise in January after jumping to its highest level in five years during December, with prices continuing to rise after the Egyptian pound depreciated several times over the past ten months.
The general consumer price index for the total Republic reached 150.6 points for January 2023, recording an increase of 4.9% from December 2022.
The Central Bureau of Public Mobilization and Statistics attributed the most important reasons for this increase to the increase in prices of cereals and bread by 6.6%, meat and poultry by 20.6%, fish and seafood by 9.4%, dairy, cheese and eggs by 10.3%, oils and fats by 7.8%, fruit by 3.8%.
The annual inflation rate of the total Republic was 26.5% for January 2023 compared to 8.0% for the same month of the previous year.
