China snatches the lead from Japan in world car exports in 2023

Tokyo - Agencies:

Data on Thursday showed that China for the first time overtook Japan as the world's largest automobile exporter in 2023.

Data published by the Japanese Automobile Manufacturers Associations in Tokyo and the Chinese Automobile Manufacturers Associations in Beijing showed that Japan exported 42.4 million cars in 2023, compared to 91.4 million cars exported by China, an increase of 58 percent due to the increasing demand for electric cars in the world.

The data added that China's exports of gasoline-powered cars to Russia also rose after Japanese, American and European automakers withdrew from the market due to sanctions related to the war in Ukraine.

The data indicated that Japan's car exports rose for the first time in two years, but were lower than the pre-pandemic (Covid-19) level of 82.4 million cars in 2019.

Japanese automakers, such as Toyota Motor Corp., have begun reviewing their production strategies in recent years with the aim of reducing reliance on gasoline-powered cars and increasing sales of cars that run on both electricity and gasoline, which in many cases travel more miles than cars that run on electricity only.
